Laura Mulvrey Theory

“In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly”. (Laura Mulvrey, 1992)

Basically what is being said here by Mulvrey  is when  it comes to the majority of music videos women are styled  to be seen from the male point of view “male gaze” whether the viewers of the music video are men, women or children. For example:

Beyonce’s song ‘Naughty Girl’.

This video takes the male gaze into consideration and is illustrated by the perfomer, Beyonce and also her female dancers. They’re attire for the music video is mostly tight, revealing clothing which is satisfying to the male audience.

An artist who attempted to challenge this is Jennifer Lopez with one of her more latest music videos ‘I Luh you Papi’.

The performer, Jennifer Lopez is using the stereotype of women being used as props in a music video and is instead using men which shows her challenging the stereotype, however the "male gaze" is still incorporated into this video as she has still been styled to be seen from the male point of view.
